The skin on our face is the part of our body that is always visible to the world. The condition of our skin depends on a variety of factors based on how we care for it, such as the environment it is exposed to, hormonal changes, our diet, stress, the list goes on. Purely with this short list of factors it is clear that our skin tells a story which is personal to us, and just focussing on the skin, a great deal of our experiences are revealed.

We only have to change our skincare routine, adjust our diet, stop drinking alcohol for a while, or have a break from the usual work routine to see that the condition of our skin is responsive to our own choices and the way that we live.

Delving a little deeper, we also know that it is not just our skin that reveals the truth about our story. Our facial expressions are designed to express how we are feeling, and communicate if we are angry or sad, frustrated, stressed, scared, or joyful. Our facial muscles are used to form these expressions, and if used in the same way over and over, they can become set in the same formation, giving us a permanent appearance of a particular emotion. Think of a time when you have had to work or study particularly hard, and you have adopted a permanent expression of stress on your face which is hard to let go of, or the grief that is evident long after the event of someone's death, or when you have had times of feeling amazing your face expresses the joy that you feel, and your skin is radiant. Our faces and our skin say it all.

In our everyday life there may be situations where we try to hide our feelings, such as being in a meeting at work when we have to be professional, talking to a neighbour who we have an issue with but we need to remain amicable, or with our partner when we want to be seen as strong but really we are feeling hurt.

What happens to the facial muscles then? And what happens to our feelings? We often find a way to bury them and build hard layers of protection which can be visibly seen in the face as a harshness, a tight jaw, a grimace, a sternness that is far from the inner beauty that is then hidden by this protection.

We can effectively build a 'mask' in order to 'face' the world.

So what if we were to go deeper still - deeper than the skin and deeper than our emotional expressions, and deeper than the mask? At our core lies our inner essence which remains untouched by the stresses and challenges of life. On the surface we may thrash around in the waves of life and feel battered by the tides as we react and resist and defend, but underneath, deep within us, there is a depth of stillness that is always there to connect to, a place of sanctuary and connection where we can find an inner settlement. When we are connected to this inner space our whole demeanour changes, we are less emotional, we can deal with life in a more effective way, and the hardness that we have built as a survival mechanism can begin to melt. We can even start to feel an inner radiance that can grow and literally beam through the face. Any tension or visible defensiveness in the face can drop, open up and let go, and your face can literally change before your eyes as it all peels away.

At our essence we are all beautiful. It is purely the way we respond to life that builds the layers on top that can mask and disguise this beauty. Clear away the hardness of the defences and the radiant beauty is naturally there, shining through.

Rebecca Murphy offers Holistic Facials, which work with the skin and the facial muscles. Naturally gentle products are used to provide a nurturing ritual which deeply cleanses, tones and moisturises the skin. The facial massage smooths and enriches the skin encouraging the release of the build up of tension in the face and maximises skin health through encouraging blood flow and lymphatic cleansing. Following the skin ritual and facial massage the Energetic Facial Release is introduced which brings a new depth to the treatment which is beautifully stilling and relaxing. This energetic  technique gently clears away signs of emotional tension from the face and also has a healing effect on the whole body, leaving you feeling refreshed, renewed and revitalised, and your face clear and radiant.

Rebecca works at The Light Centre Belgravia on Sundays, and from her home practice in North London during the week. She also offers massage and healing body treatments. Please see below for more details:
